Im Kalenderjahr 2018 wird das Cello in Deutschland das Instrument des Jahres sein. Ziel ist es, mit vielen begleitenden Aktionen Interesse für das Instrument und seine Bedeutung zu wecken. Aus diesem Anlass werde ich einige Cello-Konzerte aus dem In- und Ausland in

„Volkers Klassikseiten J. S. Bach“

veröffentlichen!

Heute ist es ein Cello-Konzert von Giovanni Battista Cirri (1724-1808) – ein italienischer Komponist der späten Barockzeit.

Giovanni Battista Cirri (* 1. Oktober 1724 in Forlì; † 11. Juni 1808 ebenda) war ein italienischer Cellist und Komponist des 18. Jahrhunderts.

Giovanni Battista Cirri erhielt ersten Musikunterricht durch seinen Bruder Ignazio Cirri (1711–1787), der Organist an der Kathedrale von Forli war. Danach setzte er seine Studien bei dem damals berühmten Giovanni Battista Martini (1706-1784) in Bologna fort. 1759 wurde Cirri dort Mitglied der angesehenen Accademia Filarmonica.

Ab 1760 wirkte Cirri für etwa fünf Jahre in Paris. Dort veröffentlichte er seine ersten Werke, eine seiner Sinfonien wurde am 5. April 1763 bei den Concert Spirituel aufgeführt, was eine besondere Auszeichnung darstellte.

1764 ließ er sich in London nieder, wo er eine Anstellung als Kammermusiker beim Herzog von York hatte. Sein erster öffentlicher Auftritt erfolgte im Mai 1764, als Begleiter einer Violinistin namens Marcella. Des Weiteren trat er 1764/65 anlässlich der Londoner Auftritte des jungen Mozart als Solist in Erscheinung. Ebenso trat er bei den damals populären, sogenannten „Bach–Abel Konzerten“ auf.

Später war er „Director of music“ beim Herzog von Gloucester.. In seiner Londoner Zeit komponierte er unter anderem drei Sonaten für Violoncello und Basso continuo, die 1765 veröffentlicht wurden.

1780 kehrte er nach Forli zurück und assistierte eine Zeit lang seinem erkrankten Bruder. 1782 wirkte Cirri als erster Cellist am „Teatro dei Fiorentini“ in Neapel. 1787 folgte er seinem Bruder als Kapellmeister an der Kathedrale von Forli.

In the calendar year 2018, the cello in Germany will be the instrument of the year. The aim is to arouse interest in the instrument and its significance with many accompanying actions. On this occasion I will present some cello concerts from home and abroad in „Volkers Klassikseiten J. S. Bach“!

Today I am releasing a Cello Concerto by Giovanni Battista Cirri (1724-1808) – an Italian composer of the late Baroque period.

Giovanni Battista Cirri (born October 1, 1724 in Forli, † June 11, 1808 ibid) was an Italian cellist and composer of the 18th century.

Giovanni Battista Cirri received his first music lessons from his brother Ignazio Cirri (1711-1787), who was organist at Forli Cathedral. He then continued his studies with the then famous Giovanni Battista Martini in Bologna. 1759 Cirri was there a member of the prestigious Accademia Filarmonica.

From 1760 Cirri worked for about five years in Paris. There he published his first works, one of his symphonies was performed on 5 April 1763 at the Concert Spirituel, which represented a special honor.

In 1764 he settled in London, where he held a position as a chamber musician with the Duke of York. His first public appearance took place in May 1764, as a companion of a violinist named Marcella. Furthermore, he appeared in 1764/65 on the occasion of the London appearances of the young Mozart as a soloist in appearance. He also appeared at the then popular, so-called „Bach-Abel concerts“.

Later he was director of music with the Duke of Gloucester. During his time in London he composed three sonatas for violoncello and basso continuo, which were published in 1765.

In 1780 he returned to Forli and assisted his ill brother for a while. In 1782 Cirri was the first cellist at the „Teatro dei Fiorentini“ in Naples. In 1787 he followed his brother as Kapellmeister at the Cathedral of Forli.
